New Delhi: Pakistan’s first transgender news anchor Marvia Malik has been fatally attacked. Malik was shot outside his residence in Lahore on Thursday (February 23) night. The anchor narrowly survived the attack.
According to the Pakistani News Dawn report, 26-year-old Marvia Malik was returning from a pharmacy. During this, two assailants opened fire on him. Malik narrowly escaped the attack. Marvia Malik told the police that she had been receiving threats over the phone for some time. He cited his activism behind this attack. Malik had moved out of Lahore for some time due to security reasons.
Marvia Malik told the police, I was doing the work of raising voice for the transgender community in Pakistan. Many people were also opposing this work. Threatening calls were coming for some time. In 2018, Malik made history by becoming the first transgender person to become a news anchor in the Islamic Republic.
Wanted to be a news anchor
Malik was fond of becoming a news anchor since childhood. Creating history, Marvia Malik started her career as a news anchor in the year 2018 as a transgender for the first time in the Islamic country of Pakistan. She is the anchor of Kohinoor News TV based in Pakistan. He revealed in many interviews that this path was not easy for him.
No support from family
Talking about her struggle in an interview with Voice of America, Marvia Malik said, “Like other trans people, I didn’t get any support from my family. On my own, I did some odd jobs and continued my studies. I always wanted to be a news anchor and my dream came true when I got selected. Through her work, she hopes to change perceptions about the transgender community.
Want to change the mindset
In an interview given to the news agency AP, Malik said, “Our degrees are of no use. Even if we ask for a job, we are rejected because of our identity, I want to change this mindset. He further said, transgender people are equally capable of doing anything if given a chance.
