Key Points

  • Nepal has asked China to increase the 2025 Indian pilgrim quota from 24,000 to 40,000
  • Package prices have risen significantly this year, reaching up to $1,700 for a 10-day trip
  • Four Nepal routes to Kailash are currently open, with the Hilsa route seeing the highest footfall
  • Local economies in Humla, Simkot, and Hilsa are thriving due to pilgrim-driven demand
  • Over 1,200 Indian pilgrims are scheduled to depart between Thursday and Saturday following a three-day route closure

The Government of Nepal, backed by the Department of Tourism and local travel operators, has made a formal and urgent appeal to China to raise the annual quota for Indian pilgrims undertaking the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. With demand far outpacing the currently allocated 24,000 slots, Nepal has requested an increase to 40,000, representing a significant jump from last year’s quota of 20,000.

The Kailash pilgrimage holds deep spiritual significance for millions of Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains in India, and it continues to reinforce the cultural and familial bonds, rooted in the “Roti-Beti” tradition, shared between India and Nepal.

Nepal’s tourism entrepreneurs argue that China’s existing quota is simply inadequate given the volume of Indian travelers seeking to make the journey each year. Both government officials and private travel agents are actively lobbying for an upward revision to meet this overwhelming demand.

Why Most Pilgrims Choose Nepal Routes

While India permits travel to Kailash through the Lipulekh and Nathu La passes, each route carries a strict annual cap of just 500 travelers, bringing the combined total to only 1,000. This limited capacity has made Nepal-routed travel the preferred option for the vast majority of Indian pilgrims, many of whom travel by private vehicle.

Four primary routes through Nepal are currently operational. The Hilsa route, in particular, has seen a sharp rise in pilgrim traffic, directly benefiting local communities in the Humla district.

A Boost for Nepal’s Local Economy

The surge in pilgrims has created a visible economic ripple effect across remote areas of Nepal. In Simkot and Hilsa, dozens of hotels and small lodges have emerged to accommodate Indian visitors. Employment has grown steadily for porters, guides, and hospitality workers in these regions.

Agricultural patterns are also shifting. A new and thriving market has emerged for locally grown produce, including apples, walnuts, and beans. Farmers across the region are now pivoting from subsistence farming to commercial vegetable cultivation to meet the demands of the pilgrim economy.

Rising Costs in 2025

Increased fuel and food prices have pushed Kailash Yatra package costs higher this year. The popular 10-day Rasuwagadhi-Kerung package now costs approximately $1,700 per person, up from $1,500 last year. The eight-day Nepalgunj-Simikot-Hilsa route has similarly risen to $1,550, compared to $1,300 previously.

Along the Hilsa route, travelers first reach the mountain gateway by small aircraft, then continue by helicopter. A single helicopter currently operates 15 sorties per day, with a passenger capacity of just four per flight, underlining the logistical constraints of the route.

Operations Resume After Three-Day Closure

Chinese authorities had temporarily suspended access to the route for three days, but normal operations have since resumed. More than 1,200 Indian pilgrims are now scheduled to travel this route between Thursday and Saturday.

Basu Adhikari, Managing Director of Touch Kailash Travel, confirmed that inquiries from prospective pilgrims are rising rapidly, signaling continued and growing interest in the Yatra for the remainder of the season.
