Xinjiang (China): Chinese scientists have recently begun drilling a hole 10,000 meters (32,808 ft) deep into the Earth’s crust in Xinjiang, the country’s most oil-rich region. China’s official news agency Xinhua reported that on Tuesday drilling started for the deepest borehole ever in Xinjiang. Earlier, China started its first civilian space mission from the Gobi Desert.
According to the report, this narrow shaft inside the ground will penetrate more than 10 continental strata or layers of rock. It has been told that it has the ability to reach the 145 million-year-old Cretaceous system of the Earth. At the same time, Sun Jinsheng, a scientist at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, told Xinhua, “The construction difficulty of this drilling project can be compared to a large truck running on two thin steel cables.”
It is known that in the year 2021, Chinese President Xi Jinping called upon his scientists to search inside the Earth. The data obtained from this discovery can be used to identify major mineral and energy resources and assess the risks of environmental disasters such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
At the same time, if this borewell work of China becomes successful, then it could be the second deepest man-made hole inside the earth. The first is the Russian Kola superdeep borehole in Russia, which reached 12,262 meters (40,230 ft) in 1989 after 20 years of drilling.
