Helsinki: After the attack on Ukraine, now Russia has also threatened the neighboring country of Finland. Russia has said that if Finland joins NATO after the invasion of Ukraine, it will face dire consequences. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced military action against Ukraine on Thursday. However, this move of Russia has been opposed by many Western countries.

Russia on Friday warned neighboring Finland of “serious military and political” consequences if it chooses to join NATO following the attack on Ukraine, the Jerusalem Post reported. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said during a weekly briefing that Finland joining NATO would have “disadvantageous consequences”.

Finland’s Prime Minister Sanna Marin said on Thursday that the ongoing debate within the country over NATO membership “will change” after the invasion of Ukraine. Niinisto has ruled out the possibility of reacting to the events through an immediate application for NATO membership.

Russia vetoed UN resolution
Russia has vetoed a UN Security Council resolution calling on Moscow to stop attacking Ukraine and withdraw all troops. The US and its supporters knew the proposal would fail but argued that it would isolate Russia internationally. On Friday in the United Nations Security Council, 11 votes were cast in favor of this resolution and one vote in opposition. China, India, and the United Arab Emirates abstained from voting. The failure of this resolution has paved the way for supporters to demand an early vote on a similar resolution in the United Nations General Assembly.
