Trump’s Face on a $250 Bill? U.S. Proposal Breaks 150-Year Tradition

A Republican congressman has introduced a bill to print a $250 banknote featuring President Donald Trump, a move that would overturn a law prohibiting living persons from appearing on American currency since 1866.

Key Points

  • Republican Rep. Joe Wilson introduced the “Donald Trump $250 Bill Act” in February 2025
  • U.S. law has banned images of living individuals on currency since 1866
  • The proposed note would feature Trump’s portrait, flag colors, and a 250th anniversary commemorative logo
  • The Bureau of Engraving and Printing’s director was transferred after calling the plan “unrealistic.”
  • A Trump-themed gold coin tied to America’s 250th anniversary was also announced around the same time

The United States is on the verge of a potentially historic monetary shift that has drawn global attention. A proposal is now advancing in Congress to introduce a $250 denomination banknote bearing the image of sitting President Donald Trump. This step would break a legal precedent firmly in place since 1866.

Current U.S. law strictly prohibits the image of any living individual from appearing on the nation’s currency. The restriction was introduced after a Treasury Department official’s likeness was printed on a five-cent note, and it has remained unchallenged for more than 150 years. Enacting this proposal would require Congress to pass new legislation, a prospect that has already triggered sharp political debate across the country.

The Bill and Its Sponsor

Roughly a month after President Trump’s inauguration, South Carolina Republican Congressman Joe Wilson formally introduced the “Donald Trump $250 Bill Act.” The legislation directs the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to design and produce a $250 legal tender note featuring the President’s portrait.

Reports indicate that officials within the Trump administration applied considerable pressure on the Bureau to move forward with the design. When the Bureau’s Director characterized the initiative as unrealistic, he was abruptly reassigned, a development that has added a new layer of controversy to an already politically charged proposal.

Inside the Proposed Design

Artist Ian Alexander has already created a mock-up of the proposed banknote. Alexander has confirmed that he communicated directly with President Trump and that Trump personally suggested specific design modifications.

The concept places Trump’s portrait at the center of the note. It also incorporates the signatures of both President Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, uses the red, white, and blue of the American flag, and includes a commemorative logo marking the country’s 250th founding anniversary.

Tied to America’s 250th Birthday

Supporters of the bill, including Treasury Department representatives, have framed the proposal as a fitting tribute to America’s semiquincentennial. The Trump administration is preparing large-scale celebrations to mark the nation’s 250th anniversary, which is set to begin this July.

In a related announcement made approximately two months ago, a gold coin featuring President Trump’s likeness was also confirmed as part of the anniversary observances. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing is currently carrying out technical assessments in preparation for the legislation, should it receive congressional approval.
