Washington, D.C.: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, during his visit to the United States to represent India at President Donald Trump’s swearing-in ceremony, has made significant remarks about illegal migration and visa delays. Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Jaishankar underscored India’s readiness to facilitate the safe return of its citizens living abroad illegally, particularly in the US.
Jaishankar confirmed that India’s position on the matter was conveyed to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. He stated, “India takes the issue of returning illegal immigrants very seriously and is committed to resolving it in a lawful and organized manner.”
India’s Firm Stand Against Illegal Migration
During the press conference, Jaishankar emphasized India’s long-standing opposition to illegal migration, which he said tarnishes the country’s global reputation and fosters other illegal activities. “We strongly oppose any form of illegal migration because it is detrimental not only to the image of our country but also to global order,” he said.
Jaishankar explained that this stance is not specific to the United States, but a consistent principle India applies universally. He noted that the US government had been briefed extensively on India’s policy and assured them of full cooperation in addressing this issue.
US Visa Delays Draw Concern
Jaishankar also used the platform to bring attention to the challenges faced by Indian citizens in obtaining US visas. “The long waiting period for US visas—often exceeding 400 days—is a matter of concern,” he said. Addressing the issue directly with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Congressman Marco Rubio, Jaishankar added, “Such delays are not conducive to fostering strong bilateral ties.”
The External Affairs Minister urged US officials to expedite the visa process, highlighting its importance for maintaining positive relations between the two nations.
India’s Policy: Clear and Principled
Reiterating India’s consistent approach to illegal migration, Jaishankar stated, “If it is proven that individuals living illegally in a foreign country are Indian citizens, we look forward to their safe and lawful return.” He further clarified that this is a principle-based policy that India applies universally, not just in the context of the US.
By addressing these pressing issues during his visit, Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s commitment to strengthening ties with the US while ensuring the dignity and security of its citizens abroad.
