Pune: The Zika virus has resurfaced, causing concern among residents. Six cases of Zika virus infection have been confirmed in Pune district, Maharashtra. Notably, two of the patients are pregnant women.
Case Details:
- Erandwane Outbreak:
- The outbreak began with a 46-year-old doctor testing positive for Zika virus in Erandwane. His 15-year-old daughter also contracted the infection.
- Two additional cases emerged from Mundhwa: a 47-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man.
- Pregnant Women Affected:
- Among the patients, two pregnant women have been diagnosed with Zika virus.
- Thankfully, both women are currently asymptomatic, and their health is stable.
- The Pune Municipal Corporation’s health department is closely monitoring all patients.
Preventive Measures:
- To curb the spread of infected mosquitoes, fogging and fumigation efforts are underway.
- Aedes mosquitoes, responsible for transmitting Zika, dengue, and chikungunya, are the primary carriers.
Historical Context:
- The Zika virus was first identified in Uganda in 1947, transmitted through Aedes mosquito bites.
Symptoms:
- Zika symptoms typically appear 2 to 14 days after infection.
- Common symptoms include mild fever, joint pain, skin rashes, red eyes, headache, stomach ache, eye pain, fatigue, and discomfort.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant and follow preventive guidelines to minimize the risk of further spread.
