Houston: Many of the at least 30,000 Afghan refugees who came to the US to escape the Taliban in Afghanistan are likely to be resettled in various cities in the state of Texas. The Agency for Refugee Services has given this information. At least 30,000 Afghans who fled the US in desperation after the Taliban took over Afghanistan could be resettled in the US in the coming weeks.
Many Afghan refugees will be housed in the Texas cities of Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, and Austin. “Afghan civilians and their families assisting the US military is in grave danger and seeking asylum in the US,” Texas Refugee Service (RST) CEO Russell Smith said in a statement. Smith said, “So far, 107 families have been confirmed to move to Austin over the next few weeks. Over the weekend, T’s Austin office resettled a family of seven and is gearing up to welcome an additional family of four this week. We know this is the beginning of this wave, and we are ready to play our part in this crisis.”
He said a staff member in his Dallas office is responding to calls to send people to Fort Lee and help newly-arrived individuals and families. Smith said that at present, he is confident that he will settle 324 Afghans in Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, and Austin in the next few weeks. RST area director Mark Hager told the media that he expects about 300 people to come to Texas in the next few weeks.
