New Delhi: As the monsoon intensifies across India, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for very heavy rainfall in nine states for Wednesday, July 24. The warning includes severe weather forecasts for multiple regions, highlighting the urgency for preparedness.
States on High Alert
The IMD has specified that very heavy rain is expected in:
- Gujarat
- Goa
- Maharashtra
- Odisha
- Madhya Pradesh
- Uttarakhand
- Punjab
- Haryana
- Rajasthan
Additionally, a warning for heavy rainfall has been issued for:
- Karnataka
- Jharkhand
- West Bengal
- Sikkim
- Uttar Pradesh
- Arunachal Pradesh
- Assam
- Meghalaya
- Nagaland
- Manipur
Monsoon Re-activation and Its Impacts
The reactivation of the monsoon has significantly impacted Maharashtra, Goa, and Gujarat. An orange alert, indicating a need for preparedness due to expected severe weather, has been issued for the next two to three days in these states. Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra, has been experiencing relentless heavy rains for the past several days, prompting local authorities to urge residents to stay away from coastal areas and avoid unnecessary travel. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has also echoed these advisories.
In Maharashtra’s Konkan region, districts such as Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg are under an orange alert. Meanwhile, the eastern part of the state, particularly East Vidarbha and Gadchiroli district, has seen continuous rainfall for the past four days. The rising water levels of four rivers in the district have resulted in the closure of 33 roads due to flooding.
Extended Forecast and Warnings
IMD’s forecast for the coming days includes:
- Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan are expected to experience very heavy rainfall today.
- Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan will likely continue to receive heavy rains until July 26.
- Punjab and Haryana are also forecasted to see heavy rains during this period.
