Dehradun: An awe-inspiring and terrifying natural phenomenon unfolded near Kedarnath Dham in Uttarakhand on Sunday morning. A massive avalanche descended from the Chorabari glacier, creating a breathtaking spectacle that left onlookers both stunned and fascinated.
The Avalanche Scene
At approximately 5 a.m., a colossal cloud of snow hurtled down the slopes, plunging into a deep ravine near the Gandhi Sarovar. The Gandhi Sarovar, situated in the upper reaches of the Kedarnath valley, bore witness to this dramatic event. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties or damage to property. Devotees visiting the Kedarnath temple captured the avalanche on their mobile phones, sharing the awe-inspiring footage.
2013 Devastation and the Mandakini River
The memory of the devastating 2013 avalanche remains etched in our collective consciousness. Back then, an avalanche struck the Chorabari glacier near Gandhi Sarovar, resulting in significant loss of life and property. The Mandakini River swelled due to the rupture of a glacial lake in Chorabari, leading to tragic consequences for many devotees.
Alertness and Precautions
While the recent avalanche is not as catastrophic as the 2013 disaster, it has still left the local community in shock. Authorities, including the police and administration, are on high alert. Devotees arriving at Kedarnath Dham are also exercising caution. Last year, a similar avalanche occurred in June, but thankfully, it did not cause any harm.
Weather Warnings and Preparedness
The hilly regions continue to experience heavy rainfall, affecting public life. The Uttarakhand Meteorological Department has issued warnings of more intense rain in the coming days. As a precautionary measure, security forces have been deployed near rivers and sensitive areas.
