Mumbai: According to the big news coming from Maharashtra, this time also the farmers cultivating onions are not getting any relief. Where on one hand the farmers are already in trouble due to falling prices of cotton and soyabean. On the other hand, now once again the farmers are not getting fair prices for onions.

At present, farmers are getting a very low rate of onion in most of the mandis of the state. Farmers say that for the last year, we farmers are not getting a fair prices for onions. It should be known that the maximum onion cultivation is done in Maharashtra’s Nashik district and the maximum onion is supplied in the country from here itself and the farmers here do not get the right price for this onion. On the other hand, the farmers of Nashik are very sad to see the low rates of onions. According to them, now they are finding it difficult to even recover the cost. Along with this, they demand that the central government should do something on the matter, in such a situation, they will not be able to pay the school fees of their children.

In fact, this year not only Maharashtra but also Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh have seen bumper onion production. Due to this, the demand for Maharashtra’s onion in other states has now reduced as compared to earlier. That’s why the farmers of Maharashtra are getting less price this time than last year.

Now the situation is such that in some places they are forced to sell onions at the rate of Rs 1 or Rs 2 per kg. Which is very less than the cost. According to the Onion Producer Organization, their cost has reached an average of Rs 20/kg. On the other hand, traders say that at present there has been a considerable increase in the production of onions. At this time more arrivals are reaching the mandis.

At the same time, the model price of onion (the rate at which most of the trade takes place) at the Lasalgaon Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee yard, Asia’s largest onion market, is Rs 675-700/quintal. Which is much less than before. Whereas a year ago, the price was Rs 2,480 and in 2021 it was Rs 3,801. Along with this, in the year 2020 also the prices were more than 2,020.
