Junior Doctors of West Bengal to End Protest Today

Kolkata: After a prolonged protest that began on 10 September, junior doctors of West Bengal have decided to end their demonstration outside the Health Bhawan in Salt Lake, Kolkata, today. The doctors will mark the end of their protest with a march from the Health Bhawan to the CBI office in the CGO Complex.

In a late-night press conference on 19 September, the junior doctors announced their decision to return to work starting today, 21 September. However, they clarified that their strike would continue partially. While they will resume providing emergency and essential services, they will not participate in outpatient department (OPD) functions or cold operating theatres. Additionally, they plan to set up medical camps in flood-affected areas to assist those in need.

The doctors emphasized that their struggle for justice is far from over. They have given the Bengal government a one-week ultimatum to fulfill its promises. If the government fails to act within this period, the doctors have vowed to resume their strike. The protest, which began after the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on 9 August, has now lasted 41 days.

The junior doctors highlighted that their protest had led to significant changes, including the removal of the Kolkata Police Commissioner, the Director of Medical Education (DME), and the Director of Health Services (DHS). However, they stressed that these changes do not signify the end of their movement. The doctors also announced the launch of ‘Abhaya Clinics’ to provide medical assistance in flood-affected areas of West Bengal.

“There is a flood situation, and it is our duty to support those who stand with us. If they are facing any disaster, we should be there to help them. We will return to our hospitals and will also run Abhaya Clinics in flood-affected areas,” the junior doctors stated.

The West Bengal government has issued a list of instructions aimed at ensuring the safety and efficient functioning of healthcare professionals, which need to be implemented immediately.
