The declaration of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election results on May 4 has been followed by a wave of targeted violence, with local reports indicating that multiple districts are currently under high alert. In Murshidabad, a devastating bomb blast in Salar left a young man with life-altering injuries, reportedly losing both hands in the explosion. Local police and central forces have cordoned off the area as they investigate the source and intent behind the bombing.
Further unrest has paralyzed parts of Howrah, specifically in the Chara Basti area of Shibpur. Residents reported a chaotic scene of stone-pelting and incendiary devices being hurled, with several shops vandalized during the skirmishes. These incidents have resulted in multiple injuries, prompting an increased presence of security personnel to prevent further escalation.
The Ambush of Chandranath Rath
The most high-profile incident occurred late Wednesday night, involving the murder of Chandranath Rath, the personal assistant and close strategist to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari. Rath, who was instrumental in Adhikari’s victory over Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur, was targeted in what investigators describe as a “professional hit” near the Kolkata airport.
According to police reports, at least four motorcycle-borne attackers intercepted Rath’s SUV in Doharia. The assailants, reportedly using Glock 47X pistols and a vehicle with a fake number plate, opened fire at point-blank range. Rath sustained fatal injuries to his chest and stomach, while his driver, Buddhadeb Bera, remains in critical condition after being hit in the chest and leg. Suvendu Adhikari has condemned the killing as a “cold-blooded and pre-planned murder,” attributing the violence to what he termed “15 years of Mahajungle Raj in Bengal”.
Breakthrough in Investigation and Political Aftermath
The Bengal Police have achieved an initial breakthrough by taking three individuals into custody regarding the Rath murder. This development was confirmed by Divyendu Adhikari, brother of Suvendu Adhikari, during a televised briefing. Despite these arrests, the political atmosphere remains extremely tense, as the BJP’s landslide victory of 207 seats has met with allegations of rigging from the outgoing TMC administration, which was reduced to 80 seats.
As central forces continue to patrol sensitive zones, the Election Commission is closely monitoring the situation to ensure that the transition of power is not further marred by bloodletting. The upcoming days are seen as a critical test for the state’s law enforcement as they navigate the fallout of the most significant electoral shift in West Bengal’s modern history.
