On Friday, Kuwait’s Ministry of Defense issued an official statement confirming that two military outposts situated along the country’s northern border were targeted by explosive drones originating from Iraq. According to the Ministry of Defense, the attack took place on Friday morning. Two explosive drones, arriving from the Iraqi border, struck two locations along Kuwait’s northern land frontier. Military investigators revealed a sophisticated, albeit unusual, control method, noting that the drones were monitored through advanced technical links.
The Ministry noted with relief that no soldiers or civilians lost their lives in this attack; however, the equipment and infrastructure at the military facilities sustained significant damage. Immediately following the incident, Kuwaiti security forces brought the situation under control and implemented defensive countermeasures, including electronic jamming and increased aerial patrols.
Persistent Threats and Proxy Actors
This is not the first instance in which Kuwait has been targeted in the current 2026 security cycle. Normalizing Air Travel Amid Regional Instability
Amidst the border tensions, a piece of reassuring news has also emerged for the traveling public. Kuwait’s Director-General of Civil Aviation, Sheikh Humoud Mubarak Humoud Al-Sabah, has announced that the airspace over Kuwait International Airport has now been officially reopened. It is noteworthy that, in light of severe security concerns and regional instability, this airspace had been closed as a precautionary measure since February 28, 2026.
According to the Public Authority of Civil Aviation, Terminals 4 and 5 of the airport will be reopened for specific regional and international destinations starting this coming Sunday. Sheikh Hamoud clarified that plans to gradually normalize flight operations have been formulated only after a thorough review conducted in consultation with security agencies. The reopening marks a critical step in Kuwait’s effort to maintain economic connectivity despite the ongoing military provocations at its borders.
