Berlin: The speculation has intensified after the Center for Disease Control of Germany confirmed that more than 944 people died of Covid-19 in the country on Tuesday. Chancellor Angela Merkel and governors of the country’s 16 provinces may extend the lockdown to the end of January.

The currently enforced lockdown in Germany took effect from 16 December. Earlier, partial lockdown was in place since November but it did not help to stop the epidemic from spreading. The partial lockdown was to remain in force until 10 January, but was changed midway.

Merkel has a meeting with the governors of the provinces on Tuesday and will decide how long the lockdown should continue and to what extent the schools should be opened. Apart from this, the meeting’s agenda also includes a discussion on the intense criticism of the phased vaccination scheme. Vaccination has begun a week before in 28 EU member countries, including Germany.

Pfizer-BioNTech is criticizing not only the opposition but also some people from the Seventy Alliance for taking too much of a precaution in approving the vaccine. The European Union has so far approved the use of this vaccine only. The European Union is also considering a Moderna vaccine.
