New Delhi: The final of the Chess World Cup 2023 was a draw between India’s young Grandmaster Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa and Norway’s Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen. They played two games in Baku, Azerbaijan, but neither of them could win. They agreed to play a tiebreaker on Thursday to decide the champion. Praggnanandhaa is the second Indian Grandmaster to reach the final of the Chess World Cup after Viswanathan Anand.
Praggnanandhaa beat world number three Caruana in the semi-final
Praggnanandhaa reached the final by beating world number three Fabiano Caruana in the semi-final. He won the tiebreaker 3.5-2.5 after the two classical games were tied at 1-1. It was a historic victory for the 18-year-old player.
Praggnanandhaa became International Master at 10 and Grandmaster at 12
Praggnanandhaa is a talented young player from India. He became an International Master when he was only 10 years old. He was the youngest player to do that at that time. Two years later, he became a Grandmaster when he was 12 years old. He was the second youngest player to do that at that time.
Viswanathan Anand has won the Chess World Cup twice
India’s veteran Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand, who is 53 years old, has won the Chess World Cup twice. He won the title for the first time in 2000 and again in 2002.
