New Delhi: A total of 62.20 percent voter turnout was recorded in the fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections on May 20, as per revised figures released by the Election Commission on Thursday. Notably, women outvoted men in this phase.
The Election Commission’s statement revealed that 63 percent of registered female voters cast their ballots, compared to 61.48 percent of male voters. This phase covered 49 seats across six states and two union territories, with over 8.95 crore eligible voters, including 4.69 crore men, 4.26 crore women, and 5,409 third-gender voters.
In states like Bihar, Jharkhand, Ladakh, Odisha, and Uttar Pradesh, women’s participation surpassed that of men. Bihar saw a significant gender gap, with 61.58 percent of women voting compared to 52.42 percent of men. Similarly, in Jharkhand, 68.65 percent of women voted, while only 58.08 percent of men did.
West Bengal reported the highest participation among third-gender voters, with 38.22 percent casting their votes. The Election Commission noted that the final voting percentages will be confirmed after the counting of postal ballots and the declaration of election results.
