Key Points

  • The new feature enables viewers to purchase “Jewels” to send animated digital gifts, which creators receive as “Rubies” that convert directly into revenue.
  • To celebrate the India launch, YouTube added hyper-local virtual gifts like Vada Pav, Chai Toast, and Pani Puri alongside popular regional expressions.
  • Eligible creators can activate the tool in YouTube Studio via the Virtual Items Module, which will automatically replace Super Stickers during these broadcasts.
  • The feature comes as the Indian creator economy surges, with channels generating seven-figure annual revenues growing by more than 20% year over year.

YouTube has officially expanded its monetization ecosystem in India by rolling out its highly anticipated “Gifts” feature for vertical live streams. Designed to give content creators a vibrant stream of extra income, the feature transforms passive viewing into a highly visual, real-time community experience. The rollout specifically targets India’s massive base of mobile-first viewers who heavily consume vertical video formats.

Through this update, YouTube joins other major social platforms that rely on virtual gifting systems to drive creator economies. Fan support has quickly evolved from a simple chat option into a primary financial driver for independent digital artists.

Understanding the Mechanics: Jewels and Rubies

The digital framework behind the Gifts feature relies on two distinct virtual currencies that streamline how transactions occur between audiences and creators.

  • Jewels: This is the viewer-facing currency. Users can buy Jewels in bundles directly through the YouTube mobile app. During an active vertical live stream, viewers redeem these Jewels to unlock and launch animated graphics that appear directly over the video broadcast.
  • Rubies: This is the creator-facing currency. When a viewer sends an animated gift, it converts into Rubies for the streamer. YouTube’s payout structure awards one Ruby for every two Jewels spent by a fan, with each Ruby carrying a fixed financial value paid out alongside regular partner earnings.

Localized Expressions for Indian Fandoms

To ensure the feature resonates deeply with local audiences, YouTube tailored the launch with a colorful variety of India-exclusive virtual rewards. Instead of generic global icons, fans can splash popular street food and cultural slang across their favorite creator’s screen.

Available launch animations include digital representations of Vada Pav, Pani Puri, and Chai Toast. Alongside these items are popular regional expressions like “Badhai Ho,” “Kem Cho,” “Macha,” and the classic “All Izz Well.” The platform has also confirmed that it will launch seasonal and holiday-specific designs for major occasions such as Diwali and Holi later in the year.

How Creators Can Turn on the Feature

Activating the new system requires minimal technical effort. Eligible channels already enrolled in the YouTube Partner Program can navigate to the Earn section inside YouTube Studio on a computer or mobile device. From there, creators must review and accept the newly updated Virtual Items Module.

Once turned on, the feature automatically deploys across all eligible vertical live broadcasts. However, creators should note a structural tradeoff, enabling Gifts will automatically disable the traditional Super Stickers option for those specific live streams, as the platform shifts its focus toward more dynamic, animated interactions.

Contextual Growth of India’s Creator Economy

The rollout aligns with explosive internal metrics regarding the Indian digital landscape. According to recent platform data, the number of Indian YouTube channels pulling in an annual revenue of seven figures or more has jumped by over 20% year over year. Furthermore, an internal survey revealed that 92% of Indian creators credit YouTube with helping them establish deep, sustainable community bonds with their audiences.

Prominent Indian gaming creator Naman Mathur, widely known online as MortaL, praised the addition, noting that highly visual fan-funding tools act as incredible motivational boosters. He explained that these interactive tools push creators to stream for longer periods and build deeper connections, turning the live chat section into a shared cultural space for the community.
