Key Points

  • Maruti Suzuki will unveil its first flex-fuel car in India, to be flagged off by Ministers Nitin Gadkari and Hardeep Singh Puri
  • The vehicle is widely expected to be the Fronx, previously showcased at international motor shows
  • The car will be compatible with E100, pure ethanol fuel, making it India’s first such vehicle
  • Flex fuel vehicles require extensively modified fuel systems and will be priced higher than standard variants
  • Maruti Suzuki had earlier showcased a flex fuel Wagon R prototype at Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2024
  • Other manufacturers are also working on flex fuel models, with wider rollout expected as E100 availability grows

Maruti Suzuki is preparing to unveil its first flex fuel car in India, a development that aligns directly with the Central Government’s sustained push to reduce the country’s dependence on imported crude oil and lower vehicular emissions. The unveiling will take place in the presence of Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari and Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri, underlining the political and policy significance of the launch.

The vehicle in question is widely expected to be the Fronx, a model that Maruti Suzuki had previously displayed in flex fuel configuration at international auto events, including a version compatible with E85 fuel shown in Japan.

What Makes a Flex Fuel Car Different

A flex fuel vehicle is engineered to run on any blend of petrol and ethanol, all the way up to E100, meaning pure ethanol with no petrol content whatsoever. This is a fundamentally different proposition from the ethanol-blended fuels such as E20 or E30 that conventional cars can handle with minor modifications.

To achieve E100 compatibility, a vehicle requires an entirely redesigned fuel system. The fuel injectors, engine management software, fuel lines, seals, and sensors must all be built or recalibrated to handle ethanol’s distinct chemical properties, including its higher moisture absorption and different combustion characteristics. As a result, flex fuel variants will carry a higher price tag than their standard petrol counterparts. However, the environmental gains, including significantly lower carbon emissions and reduced dependence on fossil fuels, are expected to be considerably greater.

Maruti’s History With Flex Fuel

This launch does not come out of nowhere. Maruti Suzuki showcased a flex fuel Wagon R prototype at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2024, signaling the company’s intent to enter this space well in advance. The Fronx’s compatibility with E85 was also demonstrated in Japan, offering an early preview of the technology the company has been developing for the Indian market.

A Growing Segment

Maruti Suzuki will not be alone in this space for long. Several other automobile manufacturers are also understood to be developing flex fuel models for the Indian market. Industry observers expect the segment to grow rapidly once the availability of E100 fuel, or significantly higher ethanol blends, becomes more widespread across the country’s fuel retail network.
