Kolkata: It has been a month since the horrific rape and murder of a young lady doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, yet the city’s outrage shows no signs of abating. The streets outside the hospital remain a hub of protest, with hundreds of junior doctors demanding justice. The family of the deceased trainee doctor has also joined the demonstrations, amplifying the call for accountability and change.

A Mother’s Heartfelt Plea for Justice

Last Wednesday, the parents of the deceased doctor joined the protest at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, addressing the media with poignant words. The mother, visibly emotional, said, “RG Kar Hospital took away one of my daughters, but today I have gained lakhs of sons and daughters. This has given me immense strength. I want justice. Just as I endure sleepless nights, I wish the same for the culprits.”

Citywide Solidarity: Lights Out, Candles Lit

In a powerful display of civic unity, Kolkata residents turned off their lights from 9 pm to 10 pm on Wednesday, participating in a candlelight march to honor the memory of the slain doctor. Major landmarks, including Victoria Memorial and Raj Bhavan, along with countless homes, plunged into darkness as part of the protest.

Governor’s Call for Action

Bengal Governor C.V. Anand Bose joined the candlelight vigil at Raj Bhavan, stating, “When light is feared, darkness is dear.” He urged Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to take decisive action to address the public’s anger and ensure the safety of women in the state. Governor Bose emphasized the need for maintaining law and order and called for concrete steps to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Widespread Protests Across West Bengal

The call for justice resonated beyond Kolkata, with people in various districts of West Bengal taking to the streets. Protesters lit torches, and candles, and even used mobile phone lights to demand justice for the victim. The ‘West Bengal Junior Doctors Front,’ which organized the protest, aptly named it ‘Let there be light, let there be justice.’

Protesters are urging for a swift resolution to the case to ensure that justice is not delayed any further. The case is currently being heard by a bench of the Supreme Court, and the nation watches closely, hoping for a verdict that will bring closure and justice to the grieving family and the outraged public.
