Sweden Introduces Paid Parental Leave for Grandparents

COPENHAGEN, Denmark: Sweden has taken a groundbreaking step in parental leave by allowing grandparents to care for their grandchild and receive paid leave. On Monday, July 1, 2024, a new law came into effect, granting grandparents the opportunity to step in and provide support during a child’s crucial first year.

1. Grandparents’ Role: Under the new law, grandparents can take up to three months of paid parental leave to care for their grandchild. This move recognizes the vital role grandparents play in a child’s upbringing.
2. Transfer of Leave: Parents can transfer a portion of their generous parental leave allowance to the child’s grandparents. A parent couple can transfer a maximum of 45 days, while a single parent can allocate up to 90 days.
