Mumbai: A sessions court in Mumbai on Monday dismissed a petition filed by Shilpa Shetty and Hollywood actor Richard Gere against a magistrate’s order acquitting the actress in a 2007 obscenity case. A case was filed against Shilpa Shetty after Richard Gere “kissed” the actress during a public event in 2007.

Additional Sessions Judge S.K. C. Jadhav rejected. However, the detailed order is not yet available.

The kissing incident took place during an AIDS awareness program held in Rajasthan and after the incident hit the national headlines, some sections termed it obscene and an insult to the country’s culture.

A case was registered against Gere and Shetty in Rajasthan under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology Act. In 2017, the case was transferred to Mumbai on the orders of the Supreme Court.

Shetty was discharged from the charge in January 2022 by a magistrate’s court, noting that she appeared to be a victim of Gere’s act.
