New Delhi: The Income Tax Department has received over 5 crore Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the assessment year 2022-23, three days before the deadline of December 31, 2021. This is the highest number of ITRs filed in a year, surpassing the previous record of 4.93 crore ITRs filed in 2019-20.

The department attributed the increase in ITR filing to various measures taken by it to facilitate taxpayers and simplify the process. These include pre-filled ITR forms, an extension of due dates, online verification of returns, and enhanced taxpayer services through e-filing portal, mobile app, and call center.

The department also thanked the taxpayers for their compliance and cooperation in filing their returns on time. It urged the remaining taxpayers who have not filed their returns yet to do so before the deadline to avoid late fees and penalties.

The department also reminded the taxpayers that they can file their returns online through the e-filing portal or the mobile app, or offline through designated centers. It also advised the taxpayers to verify their returns electronically or physically within 120 days of filing to complete the process.
