New Delhi: In a recent development that has stirred political discourse, BJP MP and former Union Minister Anant Kumar Hegde has made a significant statement regarding the amendment of the Indian Constitution. Hegde articulated that the BJP intends to amend the Constitution once it secures a two-thirds majority in the Rajya Sabha. He criticized the Congress era for introducing changes in the Constitution that he claims were aimed at establishing dominance over Hindu society. Hegde assured that the BJP would implement all the proposed changes upon gaining a majority.
Constitutional Amendment on BJP’s Agenda
Addressing a gathering in Siddhapur, Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka, Hegde emphasized the necessity to amend the Constitution, citing “unnecessary” changes made during the Congress period, which he believes were targeted at the Hindu community. He underscored that a two-thirds majority is essential for such amendments. In light of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the BJP has adopted the slogan “crossing 400,” which Hegde explained signifies the party’s goal to achieve a substantial majority that would facilitate the proposed constitutional changes.
Congress Launches Counterattack
The Congress party has responded vehemently to Hegde’s assertions, questioning whether amending the Constitution is an electoral agenda for the BJP. The party highlighted a shift in the BJP’s rhetoric from changing to amending the Constitution and raised concerns about the BJP’s comfort with the Constitution drafted by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
Rahul Gandhi Accuses BJP of Undermining Ambedkar’s Constitution
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has reacted strongly to Hegde’s statement, interpreting it as a public declaration of the “hidden intentions” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the ‘Sangh Parivar.’ Gandhi accused the BJP of seeking to dismantle the Constitution established by Dr. Ambedkar, which embodies principles of justice, equality, civil rights, and democracy. He further alleged that the BJP’s actions are aimed at dividing society and undermining democratic institutions, with the ultimate goal of establishing a narrow dictatorship. Gandhi vowed that Congress would continue to defend the democratic rights enshrined in the Constitution and called upon every “soldier of the Constitution” to unite in this cause.
The political landscape remains charged as both parties stand firm on their perspectives regarding the Constitution and its future in India’s democracy.
