LONDON: In a show of solidarity, several groups of Indian expatriates in the UK have called for a protest called ‘Hum Indian Saath Hain’ outside the India House here on Tuesday. In the wake of the attack by Khalistani extremists on the premises of the Indian High Commission, the NRIs demonstrated solidarity.

Indian High Commissioner to the UK Vikram Doraiswamy hosted a meeting of the Indian diaspora at India House on Monday evening and tried to address the concerns of Indian community leaders following the attack.

Significantly, a group of protesters waving Khalistani flags and raising slogans in support of Khalistan tried to bring down the tricolor hoisted over the Indian High Commission in London on Sunday evening. Police arrested one person in connection with the violent disturbance following the incident. After this, an additional tricolor has been installed on the Indian High Commission building.

After this meeting with the Indian diaspora, the Indian High Commission tweeted, I appreciate their solidarity after the attack on the High Commission on Sunday. Britain’s Friends of India Society International (FISI) said after Tuesday’s meeting that the Indian diaspora is deeply shocked by the despicable act of desecration of the Indian flag by extremist forces.

We are equally appalled at the UK government’s failure to take preventive measures to prevent such shameful incidents endangering Indian diplomatic officials, FISI said. In this incident, an officer of the Indian High Commission bravely fought the goons and saved India’s pride by taking the flag from them. The Indian officer had to take this action due to the lack of proper security on the premises.
