Key Points

  • Supply Chain Intact: The Central Government stated that India maintains robust fuel reserves, and national oil supply lines are operating normally.
  • Root of Pressure: Recent local dry-outs were caused by panic-buying and bulk consumers switching to retail fuel stations due to a stark pricing gap, not a nationwide shortage.
  • LPG Security: Over 1.34 crore cooking gas cylinders were successfully delivered in three days, comfortably outstripping the total number of bookings.
  • Anti-Hoarding Push: High-tech digital authentication for LPG deliveries has hit 96% to eliminate illegal black-marketing and fuel diversion.

The Central Government has issued a firm appeal to citizens across the country to refrain from panic-buying petrol, diesel, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). In an official statement released by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the government emphasised that the national energy supply chain remains completely resilient and stable.

While visible gridlocks and temporary supply pressures have been observed at select regional fuel stations, the Ministry clarified that these do not indicate a macro shortage. Instead, state-owned Oil Marketing Companies are dynamically managing the inventory, actively tracking local distribution lines, and replenishing retail outlets around the clock.

In a public announcement posted on the social media platform ‘X’, authorities urged consumers to limit their fuel station visits to their daily, necessary requirements. The government noted that public cooperation and responsible purchasing patterns are essential to preventing artificial shortages during this seasonal period of heightened agricultural and commercial transit demand.

Technical Glitches and Bulk Buyers Straining Retail Pumps

The inter-ministerial updates clarified the underlying economics of the recent rush at the pumps. The temporary local inventory depletion is largely attributed to an unprecedented influx of industrial bulk diesel buyers, such as state transport corporations, manufacturing plants, and telecom operators. Following a recent price realignment for bulk distribution, a steep price discrepancy emerged between direct industrial supply points and consumer fuel stations, prompting large-scale commercial entities to divert their vehicles to local retail pumps.

This unexpected migration of commercial fleets, compounded by fear-driven panic-buying from ordinary passenger vehicle owners, temporarily strained retail locations that normally keep a standard two-to-three-day fuel reserve. The Ministry reiterated that domestic refineries are operating at optimum capacity to feed the market, ensuring that every drop of required volume is processed and dispatched seamlessly.

Digital Tracking Safeguards LPG Distribution Networks

The government also shared comprehensive metrics to display the strength of the domestic cooking gas network. On May 20, the online booking rate for LPG refills reached an unprecedented 99% industry-wide. To crack down on illegal black-marketing, hoarding, and unauthorised diversion of commercial assets, state distributors have accelerated the adoption of Delivery Authentication Code (DAC) systems, which now secure 96% of all household drop-offs via automated mobile verification.

To further reduce the logistical burden on the traditional LPG ecosystem, the government is expanding its Piped Natural Gas (PNG) grid. Since March, roughly 7.64 lakh residential PNG connections have been successfully activated, with the foundational infrastructure for another 2.81 lakh households completed, pushing the active network to 10.45 lakh active users.

With nearly 7.99 lakh new consumers filing registrations for household lines, the Ministry assured citizens that the country’s multi-layered energy infrastructure is fully prepared to withstand any short-term demand fluctuations.
