The long-standing political suspense in West Bengal has finally concluded as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prepares to take the reins of power for the first time in the state’s history. Following a landslide victory in the 2026 Assembly elections, the party has officially entrusted Suvendu Adhikari with the responsibility of leading the new government. On Friday, May 8, during a high-profile meeting of the BJP legislative party in Kolkata, Adhikari was formally elected as the leader of the group, clearing the path for him to become the next Chief Minister.

The scale of the victory has rewritten the state’s political narrative, with the BJP claiming 207 seats in the 293-member assembly. This decisive mandate has brought a dramatic end to the 15-year administration of Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress (TMC), signaling a transition from the era of “Didi” to the leadership of “Dada.”

High-Stakes Deliberations in Kolkata

The selection process was conducted under the direct supervision of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who arrived in Kolkata on Friday morning to finalize the leadership structure. During the legislative meeting, Adhikari’s name was proposed and received unanimous support from the newly elected MLAs.

Addressing the media following the meeting, Shah emphasized that the mandate represents a desire for total administrative transformation. The transition is set to be marked by a grand swearing-in ceremony on Saturday, May 9, at the iconic Brigade Parade Ground. The event is expected to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior Union Ministers, and Chief Ministers from various NDA-governed states.

Who is Suvendu Adhikari?

Born on December 15, 1970, into a prominent political family in East Medinipur, Suvendu Adhikari is no stranger to the complexities of Bengal’s corridors of power. His father, Sisir Adhikari, is a veteran political figure who established the family’s deep influence across the Medinipur region over several decades.

Adhikari began his journey in 1989 with the Congress party’s student wing, the Chhatra Parishad, before becoming a founding member of the TMC alongside Mamata Banerjee. He played a pivotal role in the Nandigram movement, which originally propelled the TMC to power in 2011. However, citing ideological differences and internal friction, he severed his ties with the TMC in December 2020 to join the BJP, where he eventually served as the Leader of the Opposition.

The “Giant Killer” Status

Adhikari’s political ascent is defined by his unique ability to challenge the highest levels of the TMC leadership. He has earned the reputation of a “giant killer” by defeating Mamata Banerjee in two consecutive electoral cycles. After a high-stakes victory in Nandigram in 2021, he repeated the feat in the 2026 elections by contesting and winning against her in the Bhabanipur constituency, a result that effectively sealed the fate of the outgoing government.

As West Bengal enters this new historical chapter, the incoming Adhikari administration faces the immediate task of forming a cabinet and addressing the state’s economic and security challenges. With the BJP’s ideological continuity now extending from “Gangotri to Gangasagar,” the new Chief Minister is poised to begin his term with a focus on institutional reform and development.
