Cyclone Senyar alert

Key points

  • Cyclone Senyar has formed over the region near the Strait of Malacca and adjoining South Andaman Sea, IMD says it will intensify over the Bay of Bengal with strong winds and heavy rain.
  • Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining areas are under a heavy to very heavy rain alert between November 26 and early December as the system moves northwest.
  • IMD expects winds of 70–90 kmph in parts of the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea, with sea conditions very rough, fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea.
  • In North India, minimum temperatures are expected to fall by about 2–3°C over the next few days, strengthening cold wave conditions in the plains.
  • Delhi NCR will see shallow to moderate fog in the morning, a clear sunny day later, and daytime temperatures close to 23–24°C with a minimum around 8–10°C.

According to the latest IMD bulletins, a low-pressure system over the Strait of Malacca and adjoining South Andaman Sea has intensified into Cyclone Senyar, and is expected to strengthen further as it moves towards the central and southwest Bay of Bengal. Forecasts indicate sustained winds of 70–80 kmph, gusting to around 90 kmph over parts of the Bay, along with very rough sea conditions near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

IMD has issued heavy to very heavy rain alerts for Andaman and Nicobar Islands from November 26 to 29, for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry roughly between November 25 and 30, and for Kerala, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema between November 29 and December 1 as the system tracks northwest. Fishermen have been strongly advised not to venture into the south and central Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea during this period, and those already at sea have been told to return to the nearest coast.

Cold wave in North and Delhi NCR

With winter setting in, IMD says minimum temperatures in many parts of northwest India will drop by about 2–3°C over the next four to five days, after which they will remain low without major change. This pattern is likely to intensify the cold wave feel in the plains of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and parts of Madhya Pradesh, especially during night and early morning hours.

For Delhi NCR, the forecast points to shallow to moderate fog or mist in the morning, followed by clear skies, with the maximum temperature hovering near 23–24°C and minimum around 8–10°C, close to or slightly below normal. Light northerly to northwesterly winds around 10–12 kmph will add to the chill, particularly after sunset and during late night.

Weather in Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh will experience a typical late November pattern, a mix of morning fog and sunny afternoons, with a gradual increase in cold both during the early morning and late evening hours. This matches IMD’s broader outlook for a drop in minimum temperatures over the plains of northwest and adjoining central India, which includes western UP.

Daytime temperatures in most parts of the state are expected to remain in the 24–26°C range, while night temperatures may slide to around 8–11°C, creating conditions close to a cold wave in a few pockets if the departure from normal grows sharper. Cold, dry westerly and northwesterly winds will make nights feel colder than the actual thermometer reading, especially in open areas and along the Indo–Gangetic belt.

Today temperatures in major cities

Based on today’s pattern, most big cities are showing a clear north–south contrast, with a sharp nip in the air in North India and relatively warm, humid conditions in coastal regions. This aligns with IMD and climatological data that show cooling over the northwest and continued post monsoon warmth near the coasts.

Approximate maximum and minimum temperatures around November 26 as per local forecasts and recent trends are:

  • Delhi, max 24°C, min 8°C
  • Mumbai, max 31°C, min 26°C
  • Chennai, max 29°C, min 27°C
  • Kolkata, max 27°C, min 18°C
  • Lucknow, max 25°C, min 12°C
  • Patna, max 25°C, min 15°C
  • Ranchi, max 22°C, min 9°C
  • Shimla, max 19°C, min 3°C
  • Nainital, max 18°C, min 5°C
  • Jaipur, max 24°C, min 12°C
  • Bhopal, max 26°C, min 16°C

With fresh western disturbances bringing snowfall to the higher reaches of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, cold northwesterly winds spilling into the plains will continue to pull down temperatures in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh in the coming days.
