New Delhi: This week, Mumbai-headquartered Entod Pharmaceuticals made headlines with the launch of PresVu, a groundbreaking eye drop designed to eliminate the need for reading glasses. After more than two years of rigorous evaluation, PresVu has received approval from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) and its expert committee.
A Milestone in Eye Care
The approval follows a successful phase 3 clinical trial involving over 270 patients. Nikkhil K Masurkar, CEO of Entod Pharmaceuticals, revealed that PresVu will be available in October as a prescription-based medicine.
How Does PresVu Work?
PresVu is formulated with pilocarpine, a compound used in glaucoma treatment for the past 75 years. It addresses presbyopia by reducing the size of the pupils and enhancing the ability to see objects up close. Presbyopia, an age-related condition, typically becomes noticeable in the mid-40s and worsens until the late 60s. The eye’s natural lens loses its flexibility, making it difficult to focus on nearby objects.
The Science Behind PresVu
In healthy eyes, the lens adjusts its shape to focus light on the retina, a process known as accommodation. This ability diminishes with age, necessitating the use of reading glasses. PresVu improves visual clarity by creating a “pinhole effect,” which increases the depth of field and enhances near vision.
Global Context and Comparisons
While PresVu is a pioneering solution in India, similar treatments exist globally. For instance, Orasis Pharmaceuticals’ Qlosi and AbbVie’s VUITY have been approved by the US FDA for presbyopia treatment. VUITY, approved in 2021, was the first FDA-approved eye drop for this condition.
Expert Opinions: A Temporary Fix?
Despite the excitement, some eye experts caution against viewing PresVu as a permanent solution. They argue that while the drops can provide temporary relief, they may not replace reading glasses in the long run. A single drop of PresVu starts working within 15 minutes and lasts for six hours. A second drop, applied within three to six hours, can extend the effect up to nine hours.
Looking Ahead
As PresVu prepares to hit the market, it promises to revolutionize the way presbyopia is managed in India. However, users should consult with their eye care professionals to understand the best approach for their individual needs.
