New Delhi: In a dramatic turn of events amidst the ongoing unrest in Manipur, a determined group of women from the ‘Mira Pabis’ civic organization confronted an Indian Army convoy in Bishnupur district, leading to the release of 11 individuals previously detained by the military. The incident, which unfolded on Tuesday, has cast a spotlight on the escalating tensions in the region.
The confrontation occurred during a routine patrol by the Mahar Regiment of the Indian Army in the Kumbi area. The soldiers had detained armed individuals, disguised in police uniforms, who were traveling in two SUVs. Upon encountering the army personnel, the suspects abandoned their vehicles, leaving behind an arsenal that included three AK rifles with 210 rounds of ammunition, five INSAS rifles with 260 rounds, two SLRs with 180 cartridges, two hand grenades, bulletproof jackets, and other items.
However, the situation quickly escalated when the ‘Mira Pabis’ group, comprising local Meitei women, assembled at the scene. They demanded the return of the weapons and blocked the road, effectively halting the movement of the army convoy. Despite the army’s efforts to maintain control, the women succeeded in securing the release of the 11 detainees during a tense confrontation.
The Manipur Police took to social media to inform the public of the incident, highlighting the challenges faced by security forces in managing the volatile situation. The district police were dispatched to the location upon notification from the army, only to find that the detainees had already been taken by the women’s group.
This latest incident underscores the complex dynamics of the conflict in Manipur, where ethnic tensions and civil unrest continue to pose significant challenges to peace and order in the region.
