Guwahati: On Sunday, a powerful storm accompanied by heavy rain wreaked havoc at the Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati. A section of the outer roof’s ceiling collapsed, prompting airport authorities to halt operations and divert six flights to alternative destinations.

Airport official Utpal Barua reported that the incident occurred when a large tree was uprooted, blocking a road leading to the airport. Swift action ensured the road’s clearance, allowing uninterrupted fuel supply to the terminal.

Inside the airport, water leakage resulted from an overflow in the outlet pipe. Additionally, a portion of the ceiling outside the terminal building collapsed due to the combined forces of water and wind. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Despite the disruption caused by adverse weather conditions, flight operations have now returned to normal. The diverted flights were rerouted to Agartala and Kolkata.
