Pune: A scuffle broke out between Warkaris (followers of Lord Vitthal) and police during a procession in Maharashtra’s Pune district. Due to this the situation is tense. The opposition has alleged that the police lathi-charged here. However, the government has categorically denied this. Pimpri Chinchwad Police Commissioner Vinay Kumar Choubey said that some local youths tried to force their way into the palanquin procession, following which they had an altercation with the police. The police did not use any lathi-charge or force against them.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday denied reports of police lathi-charge on Varkaris in Alandi town of Pune district. He said that there was a minor scuffle between the Varkaris (devotees of Lord Vitthal) and the police.

On the other hand, the opposition parties claimed that the police lathi-charged the Varkaris and demanded a high-level inquiry and strict action.
