New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, found himself once again fielding questions about his marital status during an interaction with enthusiastic Kashmiri girl students in Srinagar. The 54-year-old Congress leader, whose marriage has been a subject of speculation for decades, responded with a mix of humor and candor.
Gandhi playfully acknowledged that he had successfully weathered the pressure to tie the knot for two to three decades. “I am not actively planning to get married,” he quipped, “but if it happens, well, that’s okay.” His lighthearted approach left the door open, hinting that he wouldn’t rule out the possibility altogether. The students, amused by his response, cheekily requested an invitation to his eventual wedding, to which Gandhi readily agreed, eliciting laughter from the audience.
The conversation didn’t stop there. Rahul Gandhi steered the discussion toward weightier matters, advocating for the restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. He criticized the current arrangement of running the Union Territory from Delhi, emphasizing that local representation was crucial. When asked about Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gandhi expressed his frustration: “My problem with the Prime Minister is that he doesn’t listen to anyone. Even when presented with evidence to the contrary, he remains unyielding.” According to Gandhi, this behavior stemmed from insecurity rather than strength a weakness that led to unnecessary challenges.
The Congress leader also touched upon the upcoming assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. He underscored that the recent downgrading of the state to a Union Territory was unprecedented in Indian history. While acknowledging dissatisfaction with the process, Gandhi affirmed that the party’s principle was clear: to reclaim statehood and ensure meaningful representation for the people of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
Rahul Gandhi’s stance on marriage remains enigmatic, but his commitment to addressing critical issues whether related to governance or personal life remains steadfast. As the political landscape evolves, so does the perennial question: Will Rahul finally take the plunge? Only time will tell.
