Mumbai: Railways has taken various measures to maintain cleanliness at stations and tracks. The Mumbai suburban network of Central Railway is one of the largest suburban rail networks in the world. It has a network of 336 route kilometers with 4 corridors. Swachhta Raths are run between CSMT to Kalyan on Central Railway Main Line and CSMT to Mankhurd on Harbor Line for collecting and clearing garbage from tracks.

During the year 2021-22, 1.66 lakh cubic meters of garbage was removed from the railway tracks in the suburban section. During the Sunday Mega Maintenance Block and at night the garbage is removed through the Special Muck Train.

Trouble occurs in monsoon
Debris and rubbish are dumped along the tracks which spoil the tracks and also block the flow of drains passing below, thereby blocking the movement of local trains during monsoon due to water-logging on the tracks. To overcome this problem, the waste is packed in sacks which are then loaded on the Swachh Rath (MAK) special train. There are 5 Swachhta Raths running in the suburban section of the Central Railway. One Porcelain and 6 JCB machines fitted at DBKM are also operated to remove muck/dirt from the track.
