Dublin: Leo Varadkar became the new Prime Minister of Ireland. Leo Varadkar is of Indian origin. In the coalition government formed in 2020, he has become the Prime Minister under the agreement of sharing the chair. He has also previously been Taoiseach (PM) and Defense Minister from 2017 to 2020.

Leo Varadkar is originally from Sindhudurg in Maharashtra and has been visiting India. Earlier, he had come to Maharashtra in 2019 to meet his family.

Leo Varadkar was born in Dublin. His Irish mother was a nurse and his Indian-origin father Ashok Varadkar was a doctor. His parents used to work together. Leo is also a doctor by profession.

Leo Varadkar is the youngest leader to become the Prime Minister of Ireland, he was sworn in as Prime Minister for the first time in 2017. Varadkar is currently 43 years old and he is gay.

First openly gay Irish PM

Apart from being the first Irish Prime Minister of Indian origin, Leo Varadkar is also the first openly gay head of government and the world’s fourth gay leader.

The Tanaiste, who became Ireland’s youngest and first gay and mixed-race Taoiseach in 2017, admitted that when he first entered politics he may not have been fully aware of, or accepted his sexuality.

Varadkar came out as gay in an interview on national radio in 2015 in the run-up to the marriage equality referendum. He has been in a relationship with his partner Dr. Matthew Barrett since 2015.

Leo Varadkar reached his native village in Maharashtra for the first time after becoming the Prime Minister on 29 December 2019. Here he also worshiped the village deity. This was Varadkar’s personal visit.

Leo Varadkar has come to India four times so far and he also knows how to speak Marathi. His father taught him to speak Marathi.
