China-one-child policy

Beijing: More than four years after China ended its controversial one-child policy, China is considering additional measures to increase the birth rate in the country. China kept strict control over the birth of additional children in the name of conserving less resources for its growing economy for decades.

However, the falling birth rate is now being seen as a major threat to economic progress and social stability. In a statement issued by the National Health Commission, it said that it will conduct research to increase the birth capacity. The commission said that the initiative would first focus on the northeast, the country’s major industrial area where a large population decline has been observed as youth and families have migrated elsewhere for better opportunities.

The population is seen since 2019
The region, consisting of three provinces Liaoning, Jilin, and Heilongjiang, saw a decrease in population for the seventh consecutive year 2019. According to the National Bureau of Statistics of China, the birth rate in 2019 was 10.48 per one thousand which is the lowest since 1949. In 2019, 1 crore 46 lakh 50 thousand children were born, which was 5 lakh 80 thousand less than before.
