Indian Spices Over Carcinogenic

New Delhi: In a significant health and safety move, Hong Kong and Singapore have imposed bans on the sale of certain Indian spice brands following the detection of the carcinogenic pesticide ethylene oxide in various spice products. The bans come as a response to tests revealing levels of the chemical exceeding safe consumption limits.

Singapore’s Proactive Stance on Food Safety
The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has taken a firm stance by prohibiting the import of ‘fish curry’ masala from India, citing the use of ethylene oxide at levels deemed unsafe for human consumption. The SFA has highlighted that while there is no immediate risk from consuming foods with low levels of ethylene oxide, chronic intake could lead to significant health issues.

Hong Kong’s Recall and Quality Concerns
Similarly, the Hong Kong Food Safety Center (SFA) has issued a recall for the same product. An Indian spice company implicated in the recall has stated that while each shipment is subject to quality inspection by the Spices Board of India, they are currently seeking official clarification to address the concerns raised.

Health Implications of Ethylene Oxide
Classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by an international cancer research agency, ethylene oxide is associated with severe health risks, including an increased likelihood of breast cancer. Despite its common use as a disinfectant and pesticide, its application in food products is strictly regulated due to its potential to cause miscarriages, genetic mutations, and cancer.

International Regulations and Precedents
The European Union had previously recognized the dangers of ethylene oxide, banning its use as a pesticide in 1991 and food products since 2011. This action was taken after studies indicated that ethylene oxide could react with food components, diminishing their nutritional value and posing a risk to human and animal health.

Consumer Advisory
Authorities have advised consumers against the use of products containing high levels of ethylene oxide and recommend seeking medical advice if health concerns arise from their consumption.

This development underscores the importance of stringent food safety regulations and the global effort to ensure the well-being of consumers by preventing exposure to harmful chemicals in food products.
