New Delhi: The annual spiritual journey to the revered Amarnath Temple, affectionately known as Baba Barfani’s abode, has commenced with the opening of registrations for the Amarnath Yatra 2024. Devotees eagerly anticipating the sacred pilgrimage can now mark their calendars for the period between June 29th and August 19th, as announced by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB).

The Sacred Abode of Baba Barfani

Nestled amidst the snowy peaks of the Himalayas, the Amarnath Temple stands as a testament to Hindu devotion and mythology. Known as the gateway to Baba Barfani, this temple is one of the 51 Shaktipeeths, revered sites where fragments of Goddess Sati are believed to have fallen. The temple’s legendary significance stems from the belief that it was here Lord Shiva divulged the secrets of life and immortality to Goddess Parvati. The temple, shrouded in snow for most of the year, can be reached via two routes: the traditional 48-kilometer Nunwan-Pahalgam path in Anantnag district and the shorter 14-kilometer Baltal route in Ganderbal district.

The Majestic Amarnath Cave

Perched at an altitude of 3,888 meters above sea level in the Kashmir region, the Amarnath Temple is a cave sanctuary where the naturally formed ice lingam of Baba Barfani ebbs and flows with the lunar cycle. This enigmatic ice formation is venerated by devotees as a symbol of Lord Shiva’s divine essence. The pilgrimage to this hallowed cave is a challenging endeavor, with Hindu pilgrims often relying on the assistance of local Muslim horsemen to complete their spiritual quests.
