Lucknow: India continued their unbeaten run in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 with a thumping 100-run victory over England in a low-scoring match at Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. India has won all six of their matches so far and has become the first team to qualify for the semi-finals of the tournament. India has also reclaimed the top spot in the points table, pushing South Africa to the second position.
India defended their lowest score against England in World Cup history, as they bowled out the visitors for just 129 runs in 34.5 overs. England’s batting collapsed under the pressure of chasing a modest target of 230 runs, as they lost wickets at regular intervals. None of their batsmen could score more than 27 runs, as India’s pacers and spinners ran through their line-up.
Mohammed Shami was the star of the show for India, as he picked up four wickets for 32 runs in his 10 overs. He was well supported by Jasprit Bumrah, who took three wickets for 28 runs in his 9.5 overs. Kuldeep Yadav also chipped in with two wickets, while Ravindra Jadeja claimed one.
Earlier, India was put into bat by England after losing the toss. India got off to a shaky start, as they lost three early wickets for 40 runs. Chris Woakes dismissed Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, while David Willey removed Virat Kohli for a duck. Rohit Sharma then steadied the ship with a solid knock of 87 runs off 103 balls, which included nine fours and two sixes. He added 91 runs for the fourth wicket with KL Rahul, who scored 39 runs off 58 balls.
However, India lost their momentum after Rohit’s dismissal, as they kept losing wickets at crucial junctures. Suryakumar Yadav played a cameo of 49 runs off 47 balls, which helped India cross the 200-run mark. Jasprit Bumrah also contributed with 16 runs off 25 balls at the end. For England, Willey was the most successful bowler with three wickets for 46 runs in his 10 overs. Woakes and Adil Rashid took two wickets each, while Mark Wood and Ben Stokes took one wicket each.
Rohit Sharma also achieved a personal milestone during his innings, as he completed 18 thousand runs in international cricket. He became the fifth Indian to do so, after Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly. Rohit has scored 18040 runs across all formats of the game.
With this win, India have consolidated their position at the top of the points table with 12 points from six matches. South Africa is second with 10 points from six matches, followed by Australia and New Zealand with eight points each from five matches. England are fifth with six points from six matches and need to win their remaining two matches to have a chance of making it to the semi-finals.
