New Delhi: While monsoon rains bring relief to parched regions, they also unleash havoc in several states across India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for very heavy rains in nine states, including Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Uttarakhand.
Uttar Pradesh: Flood-Like Situation
- In Uttar Pradesh, 20 districts grapple with a flood-like situation. Along the Nepal border, the Ganga River has overflowed, threatening Varanasi’s ghats. The Rapti River in Gorakhpur is also dangerously high meanwhile, Bihar braces for continued heavy rainfall.
Maharashtra: Mumbai Waterlogged
- Mumbai, the financial capital of Maharashtra, faces persistent downpours. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a yellow alert, predicting heavy rains until July 19. Suburban areas report waterlogging due to incessant rain and thunderstorms. Pune, Kolhapur, Akola, Amravati, Bhandara, Nagpur, and Yavatmal are also on alert. Satara, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg expect heavy to hefty rainfall.
- The Kamwari River in Thane’s Bhiwandi area surged, inundating riverside homes. Mumbai and its suburbs anticipate moderate to heavy rains today, with some areas bracing for very heavy showers.
IMD’s Outlook
- IMD predicts heavy rains in Tamil Nadu, Western Madhya Pradesh, Western Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Eastern Rajasthan, Telangana, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura from July 18 to 20. Karnataka, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Assam, Meghalaya, and the Gangetic plains of West Bengal are also in the monsoon’s path.
Northeast India: Floods and Landslides
- In the northeast, heavy rains triggered floods and landslides, claiming at least 16 lives. Over 300,000 people have been displaced from submerged homes.
Widespread Rainfall Ahead
- The IMD’s latest bulletin warns of widespread rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning in nine states and union territories, including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka.
