New Delhi: After devastating earthquakes in Myanmar and Thailand, tremors were felt in Afghanistan early Saturday morning at 4:51 am. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake measured 4.3 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter located 221 kilometers below the surface. Residents reported shaking furniture, swaying fans, and disrupted sleep as panic drove many outdoors. Fortunately, no casualties or property damage have been reported so far.

Myanmar and Thailand Reeling From Destruction

On Friday, Myanmar experienced one of its deadliest earthquakes in decades a powerful 7.7 magnitude tremor struck near Mandalay at a depth of 10 kilometers. The quake caused widespread destruction, including collapsed buildings, damaged roads, and a burst dam that flooded low-lying areas. An aftershock of 6.4 magnitude followed just minutes later.

The disaster claimed at least 144 lives in Myanmar and injured over 730 people. Several regions, including Mandalay and Naypyidaw, were declared disaster zones as rescue operations continued amidst damaged infrastructure. In neighboring Thailand, Bangkok saw significant devastation as a high-rise building under construction collapsed, killing at least ten people and leaving over 100 trapped under rubble.

Tremors Felt Across Borders

The seismic activity extended beyond Myanmar and Thailand, with tremors felt in northeastern India, parts of China’s Yunnan province, and even Delhi-NCR. Witnesses described scenes of chaos as residents fled swaying buildings in panic.

India’s Response

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep concern over the tragedy in Myanmar and Thailand. He assured all possible assistance to the affected nations, stating on Friday: “India stands ready to offer all possible help.” The Indian Embassy in Thailand is closely monitoring the situation to ensure the safety of Indian citizens in the region.

As Southeast Asia grapples with this series of earthquakes, experts warn of potential aftershocks and urge vigilance in vulnerable areas. Rescue teams continue their efforts to locate survivors amidst debris while international aid begins to mobilize for relief efforts.
