Helsinki: A month-long lockdown, including a curfew, will be implemented from Thursday in view of the deteriorating situation in the European country Latvia due to the infection.

Latvia is also included in the countries with the lowest vaccination rates in the European Union. After an emergency meeting of the government late on Monday, Latvian Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins said that the lockdown would be imposed from October 21 to November 15.

Along with this, strict measures need to be implemented to deal with the rapidly spreading infection.

Only half of Latvia’s population has yet received a full dose of the anti-Covid-19 vaccine. Carins admitted that his government had failed to persuade citizens to get vaccinated.

In the Baltic country with a population of about 19 lakh, 1,90,000 cases of coronavirus have been reported and about 2,900 people have died.
