In a major update released on May 6, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed a significant restructuring of the IPL 2026 playoff schedule. The most notable change is the relocation of the championship final from Bengaluru to the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. This decision ensures that the season concludes at the world’s largest cricket stadium, providing a grand stage for the tournament’s climax.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia clarified that while Bengaluru was the original choice, the move became necessary after negotiations with the local cricket association stalled. Officials reportedly presented demands that conflicted with the BCCI’s established rules and logistical protocols. To maintain the integrity and operational flow of the tournament, the Board opted for Ahmedabad, citing its superior infrastructure and ability to handle the grand scale of an IPL final.
Expansion into New Cricket Hubs
For the first time, the IPL is taking its high-stakes postseason to newer venues, moving away from the traditional metropolitan rotation. The playoff journey begins on May 26 at the picturesque Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala, which will host Qualifier 1.
The tournament will then shift to the New International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh. The newly developed center has been entrusted with two critical fixtures, the Eliminator on May 27 and Qualifier 2 on May 29. The BCCI emphasized that these selections reflect a desire to reward modern facilities and expand the reach of the playoffs to different regions across India.

Following a grueling 70-match league stage characterized by high-scoring thrillers, the top four teams will compete as follows:
- Qualifier 1: May 26, 2026, Dharamsala, the top two teams battle for a direct spot in the final.
- Eliminator: May 27, 2026, New Chandigarh, a knockout match between the third and fourth-placed teams.

Rising Stakes and Captaincy Debates
As the league phase nears its end, the pressure on franchises has reached a fever pitch. In the Delhi camp, head coach Hemang Badani has declared that the team is now in “survival mode,” treating every remaining game as a virtual final. Delhi faces a steep climb to secure a top-four berth, knowing that any further slip-ups will result in immediate elimination.
Meanwhile, leadership stability has become a talking point. Following a recent defeat to the Mumbai Indians, rumors regarding Rishabh Pant’s captaincy have resurfaced. Some former players and legends have suggested that the pressure of leadership may be impacting his individual performance, leading to calls for a strategic change. However, as the playoffs approach, most teams, including the consistently strong Chennai Super Kings, remain focused on securing the favorable “double chance” provided by a top-two finish.
