New Delhi: Air India, the flagship carrier now under Tata Group’s ownership, has announced significant changes to its baggage policy, alongside the expansion of its international flight network. The airline has revised its free baggage allowance, reducing the minimum weight of cabin baggage for passengers in the lowest fare class on domestic flights from 20 kg to 15 kg. This change aligns Air India with other carriers and reflects a shift away from a uniform baggage policy.
The revised fare model introduces three categories: Comfort, Comfort Plus, and Flex, each offering varying facilities at different price points. Effective from May 2, the free cabin baggage allowance for Comfort and Comfort Plus categories has been adjusted to 15 kg, down from the previous allowances of 20 kg and 25 kg, respectively. Prior to this update, Air India permitted passengers to carry up to 25 kg of cabin baggage without incurring additional charges.
In a move to strengthen its international presence, Air India is set to inaugurate direct flights from Delhi to Zurich starting June 16. This new route marks Zurich as the seventh European city to be connected directly with India via Air India. The service will operate four times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays utilizing the Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, which offers both Economy and Business class accommodations.
The airline’s decision to adjust its baggage policy comes as part of a broader strategy to optimize operations and enhance customer satisfaction. Air India’s commitment to expanding its global footprint is also evident in its increased frequency of flights to key destinations, providing travelers with more options for direct and seamless travel.
