New Delhi: The third wave of corona continues to wreak havoc all over the world, but it is a matter of comfort for us that this time Covid is less deadly than the first or second wave of covid-19. Max Healthcare, a chain of 13 private hospitals, has found in its study that this timeless than one out of four patients suffering from corona needed oxygen support. During the first and second waves of the corona, most of the people infected needed oxygen support. In April last year, there was an outcry across the country for oxygen and thousands of people lost their lives in hospitals just because they did not get oxygen support.
In the second wave, 74 percent of patients are on oxygen
Max Hospital has said on the basis of its data analysis that from April to May last year, three out of four corona-infected people needed oxygen. Of the people admitted to Max Hospital during the first wave, 63 percent of the patients were given oxygen support, while last year during the second wave 74 percent of the patients needed oxygen. Compared with the first and second wave, this time only 23.4 percent of the patients are in need of oxygen support.
This time only 415 patients in a day
According to Max, although the number of infected people is the same this time too, the number of people admitted to the hospital is much less than the first and second waves. Dr. Sandeep Budhiraja, Group Medical Director, Max Healthcare, said, during the second and third wave in Delhi, about 28,000 cases were reported daily. If we look at this point of view, during the second wave in our hospitals i.e. last year 2000 patients came daily, whereas this time only 415 patients were admitted in our hospitals. Not only this, 70 percent of the people we admitted to our hospitals last time had to be given oxygen support. This time only 25 percent are needing it. That to those who need ICU. The even better thing is that for the last two weeks, the need for ICU admission is decreasing continuously.
Less need for ICU
Dr. Sandeep Budhiraj said, the Omicron variant is relatively less lethal and patients infected with this variant require less hospitalization and oxygen and ICU beds. At the same time, the death rate in the first wave of Corona was 7.2 percent, which increased to 10.5 percent in the second wave. Whereas in the current wave this figure has been recorded at 6 percent. According to Max, due to the corona vaccination of the large population in the country, the death toll has come down. According to data, out of the total 82 deaths due to Covid-19 in the current wave, 60 percent of the deaths were of those who had not been partially vaccinated or vaccinated.
