A massive fire broke out early Thursday morning at a prominent public market complex located near Thane Railway Station in Maharashtra, claiming the lives of a dedicated firefighter and a security guard, while two other first responders sustained serious injuries. The fire was so intense that the emergency department was compelled to declare a “Brigade Call”, a high-level emergency protocol requiring maximum resources, to bring the situation under control.
According to disaster management officials, the fire erupted around 3:45 AM at the Gaondevi Vegetable Market building, located off Gokhale Road in the busy Naupada area of Thane. Because the blaze ignited while most residents were asleep, it initially went unnoticed and spread rapidly through the commercial structure. Eyewitnesses later reported towering flames rising from the ground-floor stalls, accompanied by massive plumes of thick black smoke that quickly spread panic throughout the neighboring residential zones.
Residents and BJP Corporator Sanjay Waghule alerted emergency services upon realizing the severity of the situation. As many as five fire engines, three jumbo water tankers, two standard water tankers, and four heavy rescue vehicles were immediately dispatched to the scene alongside the Regional Disaster Management Cell and multiple civic ambulances.
Casualties and Severe Injuries Reported During Rescue Operations
Yasin Tadvi, Chief of the Regional Disaster Management Cell, stated that multiple rescue workers were caught in the intense heat while attempting to battle the flames from within the structure. Additional Commissioner of Police Prashant Rode subsequently confirmed the deaths of two individuals.
The deceased have been identified as 43-year-old Sagar Shinde, who was serving as a Station Officer with the Thane Fire Brigade, and 53-year-old Kalu Shankar Gadekar, a security guard deployed at the public facility by the Thane Municipal Corporation.
Two other senior first responders sustained severe burn injuries during the initial containment push. Authorities have identified the injured as Fire Brigade Station Officer Sujit Pashte, 45, and Squad Leader Sameer Jadhav, 40. Both personnel were rushed to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa, where they remain under intensive medical care. A 19-year-old trainee fireman, Harsh Dhumal, was also hospitalized after suffering severe discomfort from acute smoke inhalation.

RDMC Chief Yasin Tadvi noted that the fire was so ferocious that it destroyed the primary market hub. The massive blaze reduced dozens of retail clothing shops, the central vegetable and fruit market, and a local municipality ward office housed within the three-story building to ashes.
Firefighters faced significant operational difficulties in extinguishing the blaze due to the dense layout of the building and a massive stock of highly flammable synthetic clothing stored inside the garment stalls. These materials acted as an immediate accelerant, creating a chemical-heavy smoke screen that choked the surrounding avenues.
While the active firefighting operation successfully managed to prevent the inferno from leaping toward the adjacent railway station infrastructure and nearby residential high-rises, cooling operations are expected to continue throughout the day. Senior civic officials reported that a specialized technical team has been ordered to investigate the structural remains, as the exact cause of the initial fire remains unknown at this time.
