New Delhi: The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, sponsored by TATA, is set to begin on March 22, 2024, with a blockbuster clash between the defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The IPL is the second-richest domestic league in the world, after the NFL, and attracts top international players and fans from across the globe. The 17th edition of the IPL will feature 10 teams, who will compete in a round-robin and knockout format for the coveted trophy and a prize money of 46.5 crore.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the schedule for the first 21 matches of the IPL 2024, which will be played from March 22 to April 7. The fixtures for the remaining 53 matches will be announced in due course, keeping in mind the dates of the general elections in India. The IPL 2024 is expected to conclude on May 29, 2024, with the grand finale at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Gujarat.
The IPL 2024 will be played across 11 venues in India, with each team having a designated home ground. The venues are Delhi-Arun Jaitley Stadium, Mumbai-Wankhede Stadium, Hyderabad-Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Chennai-M.A. Chidambaram Chepauk Stadium, Kolkata-Eden Garden, Ahmadabad-Narendra Modi Stadium, Mohali-Punjab Cricket Association Is Bindra Stadium, Bangalore-M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Guwahati-Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Lucknow-Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, and Dharamsala-Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium.
The 10 teams participating in the IPL 2024 are CSK, RCB, Punjab Kings (PBKS), Delhi Capitals (DC), Gujarat Titans (GT), Mumbai Indians (MI), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Lucknow Super Joints (LSG), and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). The teams were formed after the IPL auction 2024, which saw some of the most expensive players in IPL history being bought by the franchises. The most expensive player of the IPL 2024 is Chris Morris, who was bought by RR for 16.25 crore.
