Bengaluru: The first female officer of the Indian Air Force, Wing Commander (Retd) Vijaylaxmi Ramanan has passed away. She was 96 years old. Her son-in-law SLV Narayan informed that the Distinguished Service Medal (VSM) awarded to Dr. Ramanan passed away on Sunday due to age-related illnesses. He breathed his last at his daughter’s house here.

Ramanan was born in February 1924. After doing MBBS, she joined the Army Medical Corps on August 22, 1955, and was transferred to the Air Force on the same day. She worked as a gynecologist in various Air Force hospitals. He also treated soldiers wounded during the wars and carried out administrative duties. In August 1972 he was promoted to the rank of Wing Commander. Five years later he received the Distinguished Service Medal. She retired in February 1979. Her late husband V Ramanan was also an officer in the Indian Air Force. He has a son and a daughter in his family. Ramanan was also trained in Carnatic music and at a very young age, she also worked as an All India Radio artist.
