What Triggered the Latest Unrest?
The latest wave of tension erupted following the arrest of Arambai Tenggol, a prominent leader from the Meitei community. News of his detention quickly spread, sparking protests in several areas of Imphal. Demonstrators, particularly in the Kwakaithel and Uripok neighborhoods, took to the streets, burning tires and old furniture to demand Tenggol’s immediate release.
Government Moves to Curb Rumors and Violence
Fearing that provocative social media posts, images, and videos could inflame the situation further, the state’s Home Department, under Secretary N Ashok Kumar, ordered the emergency internet blackout. The directive, issued without prior notice, aims to prevent the spread of rumors and misinformation that could worsen the law and order situation.
The order also warns that anyone found violating the ban will face strict legal action. Authorities have appealed to the public to remain calm and not fall for unverified or misleading information circulating in the wake of the unrest.
Heavy Security Deployment Across Imphal
To maintain control, additional security forces have been deployed in sensitive areas. Despite the heightened tensions, the administration has yet to clarify the specific charges against Arambai Tenggol or the circumstances surrounding his arrest.
