Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, is making significant strides in the electric vehicle (EV) sector as part of its comprehensive development strategy. With a strong focus on environmental sustainability, the state has emerged as a national leader in EV adoption, surpassing major states like Delhi and Maharashtra.
The Yogi government’s commitment to maintaining environmental balance is evident in its aggressive promotion of e-mobility. The popularity of electric vehicles, especially e-rickshaws, has surged in key tourist cities such as Ayodhya, Kashi, Mathura, Prayagraj, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Ghaziabad, Kanpur, and Lucknow. Currently, Uttar Pradesh boasts over 4.14 lakh electric vehicles operating within its borders, a figure that far exceeds Delhi’s 1.83 lakh and Maharashtra’s 1.79 lakh EVs.
A remarkable 85 percent of e-rickshaw sales in India are attributed to Uttar Pradesh, highlighting the state’s dominance in this segment. These vehicles are extensively used for both passenger and freight transport in urban areas, contributing significantly to reducing pollution and fossil fuel dependency.
The state’s success is bolstered by the Government of India’s FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles) schemes, under which Uttar Pradesh has become the largest beneficiary. To further accelerate EV adoption, the state government has announced plans to establish over 300 new charging stations across 16 municipal bodies, ensuring robust infrastructure to support the growing EV fleet.
Looking ahead, Uttar Pradesh aims to transform itself into a global hub for electric vehicle and battery manufacturing. The state government is actively working to attract investments worth Rs 30,000 crore and create approximately 10 lakh jobs in this sector by 2030. This ambitious vision aligns with India’s national goal of having 102 million electric vehicles on the road by 2030.
Through these initiatives, Uttar Pradesh is not only contributing to environmental conservation but also driving economic growth and employment opportunities, setting a benchmark for other states to follow.
